Full Version: Time Machine refusing to back up?

After two weeks in NZ I've got 17GB of RAW photos on my MacBook that Time Machine is trying to back up. However every time I try, I get the following message: Click to view attachment

It doesn't tell me why, and I can't find any more information. Has anybody got any ideas, or knows where I can see a log file or something?

TIA

(:

Have a look in console.app, in the "system.log" or "All messages" source. Search for errors concerning backupd

I have three of those errors, but a quick google doesn't reveal anything useful. I've only got 126MB free on my mac, could that be causing it?

Couple of things.

Have you changed how you are backing up? i.e. was it over Ethernet but now you've plugged the drive straight into the Mac? That can cause problems

Have you tried restarting and manually forcing the backup to start (from the upper right tray icon)?

But I think you might be right, the lack of free space could very well be a problem.

You have a time machine backup anyway so delete something like your iTunes library and then restore it when done wink.gif Might work.

Off topic but christ Google is fast

lol

I thought this was seriously about a time machine that could not back up.

(random note: I am talking to someone from NZ right now tongue.gif )

I've removed several GB of files, so I've got 7.25GB free now. I really don't understand why it won't work. I haven't changed anything about the way the machine backs up, except for the fact that the laptop has been to NZ and back. I tried to restart the machine earlier though, and it wouldn't shut down. It closed all the programs down, but left the dock on the screen and it wouldn't do anything, so I had to hold the power button down. I tried a second time and it did the same thing. I'm now wondering if there's a problem with my laptop. pinch.gif

I've been getting the same message too lately - but doesn't happen every time - once or twice a week perhaps? I've got plenty of space free on my iMac but external HD where it's backing up onto is now almost full - not sure if that's got anything to do with it - going to be getting a bigger hard drive soon anyway so will see if that sorts it!

I've got 200GB of space available on the HDD, so that shouldn't be an issue either. This is getting frustrating sad.gif

My Apple now won't boot up, and displays a folder with a question mark in the middle. When I managed to get it to boot from CD it can't find the hard drive. I'm guessing the drive has died and I now need to get a replacement!

It's a pain, because I don't want to try anything too drastic because I haven't backed the files up because of time machine not working, so don't want to risk the data on the drive. GRRR.
